Top warning signs of Alzheimer’s Disease
The holiday season is generally a festive time that unites families. Yet in some cases, the holidays are the only time that certain relatives see each other all year.
“So when they’re home for the holidays, they’re noticing that their loved-one isn’t quite as sharp as they used to be,” said Jenna Fink, helpline manager for the Alzheimer’s Association of Minnesota-North Dakota.
One of the unintended results of these family reunions, according to Fink, is an increase in calls to the Alzheimer’s Association’s 24/7 Helpline.
“Our helpline is getting an increase in those calls from people saying, ‘we saw mom or dad or sister or brother or aunt or uncle over Thanksgiving and Christmas, and we noticed some of these changes,'” Fink said.
They noticed changes that include signs such as memory loss, difficulty performing familiar tasks, confusion with time or place, and withdrawal from work or social activities.
Early diagnosis is key
Helpline volunteers are equipped with information on the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s along with a packet of resources to direct concerned family members on the right path.
Fink’s advice during this holiday season is that if you see a loved-one displaying warning signs, to take the initiative and seek help.
“Early diagnosis is really important,” Fink said. “The benefits associated with that are that the family and the patient then know what the diagnosis is and they can better plan ahead.”
